Time-series variability of solute transport and processes in rivers in semi-arid endorheic basins: The Okavango Delta, Botswana

چکیده

We investigated hourly time-series of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the Okavango River at inlet and outlet Delta (Delta) semi-arid Botswana. estimated solute flux into out Delta. Our objectives were to (1) document temporal variations solutes (represented by TDS) determine processes that control concentrations (2) quantify load The varied from sub-weekly monthly time frames, with a semi-annual increase controlled annual pulse flooding local rains. Variable interaction floods rains stores floodplains, hundreds thousands islands isolated saline wetland pools loading River. concentration-discharge relationship for showed timing delivery river which varies across is function spatial variability stores, availability heterogeneous activation hydrologic flow pathways connect stores. Of 329,200 Mg/y delivered Delta, 68,240 (21%) removed 260,960 retained, making sink. Annually, 87% are during flooding, 4% rainy season 9% other times. findings indicate perturbations connectivity watershed play significant role modulating transport rivers cycling arid watersheds. inform sampling regimes, water quality monitoring modeling

Fish trypanosomes from the Okavango Delta, Botswana.

During 2001 and 2002, blood smears from 37 of 120 fishes belonging to 10 species captured in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana, were found to harbour trypanosomes. These trypanosomes displayed differing staining properties, were morphometrically variable, and ranged in total length from 29.5 to 80.8 microm. Mixed populations of the smaller and larger trypanosomes were found in most fish exa...

Simulation of the catchments hydrological processes in arid, semi-arid and semi-humid areas

Hydrological processes and their spatial distribution directly are relevant to climate, topography, geology, and land use in the watershed. Therefore, use of a model whit integrity and high performance for simulating the process in deferent watersheds is very important. In this study was assessment performance of semi-distributed SWAT model in simulating hydrology processes in three watersheds ...

Investigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment  between them can lead to one of the systems or both  of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...
